Autumn/Winter 2014 Fashion Picks

Hey everyone,

Like I said last week, finding the time to post recently has been tough 😦 I really feel like I’m neglecting my wonderful followers and haven’t been able to give this my all which is a shame, but I haven’t forgotten about you and am posting/planning posts at every given opportunity!

Aaah Autumn, one of my favourite seasons. The return of boots and jackets as well as the crisp evenings and gorgeous autumnal hues make this one of my favourite seasons (behind Summer which is still the best because it’s hot!) However despite my love for summer, Autumn is my favourite fashion season as colder temperatures means more layers which means double the fun in every outfit! Whether it’s layering up with a scarf, adding a hat, or throwing on a jumper there is just something so fun about dressing for Fall!

For this post I thought I would write all about my fave fashion picks for the coming months, talk through some of the emerging trends and share with you some of the inspiration I’ve been gathering from magazines over the past few weeks, and will focus on both looks and pieces which I think are staples for the coming months (and hopefully are classics to last you for years!) Hppefully it goes without saying now, that all of the items which I link to and discuss are completely affordable and available off the high street or equivalent online retailers, so no need for fashion envy, just get shopping instead!

Blanket Cardigans

This is a piece which I have already invested in (Incl link to boohoo) as I think that not only do these cardigans look amazingly warm, they also look like they will be durable, great with any outfit and last for years to be recycled every Autumn/Winter (which is an absolute Lifestyle for Less must as who wants to pay loads of money for new items which will only be fashionable for a month or two?!) Throw over a pair or jeans and a white tee to spruce up a daytime outfit or glam up with a dress, thick tights and chunky heeled Chelsea boots and a belt to add some shape and definition. Perfect for those crisp evening walks and available in loads of different prints from check to Navajo, definitely keep your eyes peeled and check out my links below for bargain buys 🙂

This comes in an out of fashion in one form or another almost every year so having a tartan piece in your wardrobe is a no brainer! I have a gorgeous tartan skater dress which I purchased last Christmas (incl pic) but am seriously thinking about increasing the amount of tartan I have in my collection this year. I’m looking at tartan scarves or accessories to really add some daytime glam to otherwise ordinary outfits or you could go one better and invest in a tartan blanket cardigan! My only tip would be to avoid tartan skirts as these are really hard to pull off without looking like a school girl, however, if you can rock it go for it 🙂

Duster coats/jackets

A-mazing! I’m seeing these everywhere at the moment and am completely obsessed. I already purchased a black crepe duster jacket which I have worn on numerous occasions and am completely in love with. It’s so versatile and immediately makes every outfit more dressy and sharp which I love. At the moment clean lines and bold colours and massive drivers in my outfit choices so for me these are a must! With my birthday fast approaching the only thing on my wish list is a duster coat (preferably in a fluffy pastel) as they seem to suit any outfit or shape and look so snuggly and adorable, perfect for those cold winter days.

Winter Pastels

Pastel anytime is brilliant, but pastels in Autumn/Winter is even better, especially when it’s outerwear! I don’t wear many pastels as I am really pale, but I think that anyone would suit a pastel coat (especially in the duster style) I’ve seen so many different variations of pastel coats on the market at the moment and I’ve shared some below, so if you’re feeling bold invest some money in a statement piece this year to help make you stand out from the crowd. And it’s not only pastel coats and jackets that are amazing, I’ve seen some fab pastel mini’s which would love gorgeous with black tights and a black cami, so check these out too (especially if you’re not feeling quite ready for a full on pastel coat!)

Now obviously boots are essential every year, however this year there is so much choice! My three must haves are; over the knee, low heeled Chelsea boots and cut out boots. These three choices mean you are set for the whole of Autumn/Winter and even into Spring 2015! And the best thing about shoes (the way I justify my shoe addiction) is that shoes, unlike clothes, don’t come in and out of fashion as much, so they are guaranteed to last you years and you can always get them re heeled or touched up once you’ve worn them too often (like I tend to do!) Find a list of my fave boots on a budget below!

This is another one of those fashion looks which comes and goes very frequently, however, until now I haven’t really liked it enough to get involved. For some reason though, this time it really works as the varsity style cable knit jumpers look like they would be the best for the chillier months and teamed with over the knee boots and jodphurs (H&M do an amazing pair!) you are set for a casual look to carry you right back around to summer.

Hopefully, you’ve found this post useful eventhough I haven’t had time to cover off everything that I would have liked which is up and coming at the moment! What I would suggest though is that if you have some spare change and some free time why not invest in a fashion Mag like Glamour or Cosmo and check out some of their look books! They’ve always served as great inspiration for me alongside retailers own catalogues and I often make mood boards or collages of outfits and key pieces that I want to invest in, especially when they do their season change specials. So get down to your local news agents now 🙂 As always, if you found this useful or think there are any pieces or styles I’ve missed then please let me know and don’t forget to like, follow and share!

Lots of love, Leanne xx

Getting my life together – beginning with organising my wardrobe!

Hey everyone,

Sorry that it’s been so long since I did my last post! I’ve been really busy lately and it doesn’t look like it will be changing any time soon, but I promise I’ll post as often as I can over the next 6-8 weeks in any pocket of time that I do get 🙂 Work has been really busy and on top of gymnastic commitments and social engagements, my diary is jam packed – however my blog is a massive part of my life now so I am determined to keep it going even if I can only post once a week for a while.

Anyway, today I thought I would do a type of post I haven’t really done yet and write all about organising. Since becoming a homeowner last year things like organising really excite me (although I’ve always been a note taker and planner at heart!) so when my good friend showed me Alejandro Costello’s channel on Youtube, I was absolutely hooked! If like me, you could do with more organisation in your home and love feeling like everything is where it should be, then definitely check her out as she has some amazing tips and tricks to get you ready for any occasion 🙂

To give you some background, I decided that I wanted to get my house completely organised by the time the New Year rolls around. In March next year, Andy and I would have owned our house for 2 years and currently it still isn’t finished (sigh). When we bought it, it needed a lot of aesthetic work done and as happens with life, whilst most of the work has been finished, there are lots of small jobs which still need completing. Although this has been a fantastic project, sometimes it can all get a bit much and I find myself doing blitzes of the house to make it feel more together and organised, however it doesn’t take long for this all to come unravelled as not everything has permanent homes yet, and as it was our first property together, we are still taking baby steps towards finding out how we want to structure our perfect property.

For example, when we moved in we decided that our spare bedroom would just be a guest room. Over the following year, we hardly used the room at all ourselves and it felt like completely wasted real estate, so we decided to shake things up a bit and turn it into a room which we could use everyday. So started our guest room-to-office transformation project which involved the selling of our spare bed and make up table and the purchasing of a desk and PC. Since then (eventhough it isn’t completely finished yet) we’ve used the room much more! It stays tidier, looks fresher and makes us both feel a lot happier and settled. This one room transformation has really inspired me to do the same in all of the rooms in our house to see what else we can do to make our lives happier and easier than before.

As this project draws to a close I was wondering what else I could do to get organised when I decided that my wardrobes are a real area of scruffiness! The fact that they were so unorganised meant that I never took the time to properly hang anything up when deciding what to wear/at the end of the day which lead to my room slowly becoming a floordrobe. There are only so many times I could hang up my entire wardrobe in one go, so one lazy Sunday I decided to make a change. I took absolutely everything out of the cupboard laid it all out, decided what I would donate to charity and what would stay and then had a complete revamp of my storage! I currently have two wardrobes; one for tops and trousers and the other for dresses and outerwear but actually still this wasn’t categorised enough. I decided on a few categories and then put everything that I was keeping back in my wardrobe, but made some DIY labels for the different sections of my wardrobe collection e.g. boxy tops, jumpers etc. so that if I was looking for a specific item all I need to do is look at the different categories to help me narrow down where it will be saving me time and making it easier to both find outfits and also organise my clothes again at the end of the day. Not only was this really simple, but also it was completely free, pretty fun and at the end of the day I felt cleansed and like I’d achieved something!

I’ll also be repeating this in my other wardrobe (only had the time to do one of them so far) and then need to establish a good method to organise the drawers we have in our bedroom, however, eventhough I’m only half way through I feel so much more organised 🙂

What a mess!

What a mess!

During During

So much better!

So much better!

Much better for staying organised

Much better for staying organised

Anyway, I’ll keep you updated on how the rest of the house transformation goes and will also do a pic post soon about items I’ve found that I love for both organising and home decoration. I hope you like this post eventhough it’s a bit more lifestyle focussed than my previous posts! Let me know if you are aware of any other amazing organiser bloggers and please share your tips, tricks and favourite items you use to keep you organised at home or in the office!

Natural Look Make-up: Five Product Face

Hey everyone,

Wasn’t really sure what to write about today, I’ve got a plan of things to write about, but I just didn’t fancy posting about any of that today! So instead of a review or pictorial, I thought I would do a feature I’ve seen from other bloggers and tell you all about my 5 product face.

I’m just like everyone else (or at least I like to think I am!) and on days off, or days where I don’t need to go anywhere special, I really cannot justify spending the time getting properly ready and this is where my 5 product face is so useful as not only does it not need many products, it also doesn’t take a lot of time.

My five products

So here is what I do to get ready in 5 minutes using only 5 products…

Foundation – Maybelline Better Skin Foundation

Powder – Mineral Shack Matte Powder

Blusher – Seventeen Cheek Stamp in Blushing

Eyebrow pencil –Rimmel London Professional Eyebrow Pencil in 002 Hazel

Mascara – Seventeen Blow Out Mascara in Blackest Black

Natural Look This photo was taken on Sunday before I went for a bike ride, so you’ll have to excuse the mess which is my hair, as I didn’t want to get too ready before going out on a 10 mile cycle (I hate wasting good hair and make-up on a day which really doesn’t warrant it!) Now some of you are probably asking why I bother to get ready at all, but I just cannot leave the house without make up on unless it’s an emergency or I’m sick or something. I feel it’s really important to maintain a certain level of composure at all times plus it makes me feel good and that’s the best reason to do anything!

Anyway, as always I start with a clean and dry face and begin by applying a light amount of Better Skin Foundation all over my face. To blend it in I use my foundation brush from Wilkinson’s and once all blended in with no lines, I set the foundation by using my Mineral Shack Powder (from eBay and still my fave find of the year!) using my Real Techniques buffing brush. Once this has been applied all over my face and again has been blended in I add a bit of colour to my cheeks. For this I don’t use my ordinary, everyday blusher and instead I use my Seventeen Cheek Stamp blusher in Blushing as it’s a bit lighter and less iridescent which is perfect for the no make-up look. I don’t use the stamp to apply this and instead apply this by dabbing on the face with my Wilkinson’s blusher brush and blending until it is merged with the setting powder I applied before. To finish I add a slick of Seventeen Blow Out Mascara on to my lashes (both top and bottom to open up the eyes) before tracing the eyebrows with my Rimmel Professional Eyebrow pencil.

And then you’re ready to go out having perfected the natural look with only 5 products in no time at all!

I know this post is pretty quick and easy, but I felt that this reflected the look the best, so if you liked it please like, share and comment 😀

I was nominated for the Liebster Award!

Hey blog fans,

I’ve been nominated for another award, can you believe it?! This time it’s the Liebster award which is so special as this award is designed to celebrate new bloggers. It’s great to be nominated for an award as it really brings me confidence that Lifestyle for Less is going well, but also being nominated and nominating other blogs is great exposure as some of my favourite new blogs have been found thanks to scrolling through blog award nominations 🙂

So before I get started, I want to say thanks to Amy from Dancing in Dior for nominating me! Definitely check it out if you haven’t already 🙂 She blogs about fashion and beauty and has an amazing style of writing which is so approachable and fun and is an absolute must to check out!

Anyway, that’s enough from me as an intro – so now time to answer some questions:

  1. Why did you start your blog?

I’d been thinking about doing it for a while actually! I subscribe to so many blogs and vlogs and yet none were exactly what I wanted to read. I love blogs about fashion and beauty and yet all of the blogs I watched seemed to contain so many expensive products that I just couldn’t justify purchasing, so I thought why not do it myself? And then, Lifestyle for Less was born and I wouldn’t take it back as I’m having so much fun writing!

  1. Funky, coloured clothing or simple, modest colours?

This is a tough question! People often comment on the amount of colour that I wear, however I really like muted pastels and of course black and white. Some of the favourite items of clothing that I own are in simpler colours, but I also love brighter pieces to jazz them up a bit, so I really can’t decide!

  1. What would you like/did you study in college/university?

I didn’t go to Uni because I really want to be a Manager or Director in the future, so I thought I would get a full time job and work my way up from the bottom. If I was to go to Uni though, I would probably want to get a degree in Social Media in Business or Business Management as both are topics I find really interesting and would love to study 🙂

  1. Favourite movie?

Too hard to pick just one! My equal favourites are Mean Girls, Shawshank Redemption and Moulin Rouge.

  1. Where do you consider your ‘quiet’ place, where you can relax or reflect?

I don’t think I really have one. It’s not often I need quiet time, because I’m a pretty hyper and full on person. However, I do like to do yoga, so if I needed some thinking space, I would definitely go to yoga and find some peace.

  1. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I would have to pick Marilyn Monroe. I think that she is a role model for so many women due to the confidence she exuded, however, she was also quite complicated and I think deeper that she appeared to the media, so I’d love to pick her brains on both her style/fashion and her outlook on life.

  1. If you were to “live” a TV show, which would it be? I.e, your life is actually what plays out in the show.

This is such a stupid answer, but probably Made in Chelsea! I love this show and think that Chelsea is such a beautiful part of London (plus they travel all of the time) so would love to be in this. (Hope this is what you meant)

  1. Would you ever consider making YouTube videos? If you already have, post your links! If not, why not?

Absolutely! I’m hoping that by the end of September I will have uploaded my first video, but it’s just about finding the time to do it 🙂

  1. Would you rather have a best friend that lives far away, or just a few acquaintances that live nearby?

Definitely a best friend that lives far away. Distance doesn’t mean anything especially with tools like Whatsapp and Skype around, so it would be like they weren’t far away at all.

10. Phone calls or texts?

Texts, I hate speaking on the phone unless it’s for work!

11. What is your dream Vacation?

I want to go to Bora Bora! It’s really beautiful, the seas are crystal clear and the accommodation I’ve looked at has glass floors so you can see the sea in all of the rooms. It’s really expensive though 😦

So, now I’ve been nominated it’s time for me to do the nominating!

I would like to nominate (and I apologise if any of the people I’ve nominated have already been nominated or answered):

Beck in a Blog as I love her style of writing and her content is always amazing (plus I have no idea how she manages to post so often)

Sarah Loves Makeup as her posts are really informative yet easy to read, and her pictures are so lovely. Her blog also looks really clean and fresh which I love!

And Herbamum as I came across her blog quite recently and really like it! The posts are really varied, interesting and detailed as well as easy to read and really fun.

Definitely check all of these amazing bloggers out if you haven’t already. Let me know in the comments below who your fave bloggers are, as I’m always looking for more blogs to check out and follow 🙂

My questions are:

1. What is your most recent purchase?

2. What is your favourite clothing store and why?

3. Would you rather spend more on 1 product or less on several products?

4. Real flowers or artificial ones and why?

5. What is your favourite perfume?

6. Do you prefer a full face of make up or no make up at all?

7. What is your favourite colour and is it also your favourite colour to wear? (For example, my favourite colour is pink, but my favourite colour to wear is probably black)

8. Bright colours or neutrals?

9. Do you always wear accessories with an outfit and how important do you think they are?

10. Is it more important to be fit and healthy or happy?

11. What made you start writing a blog?

Thanks for reading everyone, I hope you are enjoying these posts as I love writing them 🙂 Please like, share and comment if you enjoyed it and don’t forget to let me know who your favourite bloggers are!

Lots of love, Leanne xx

Product Review – Maybelline Baby Skin Primer and Pore Eraser

Hey blog fans,

It’s that time again for another entry of Lifestyle for Less! Before I get started, I just wanted to do an update and have a bit of a chat really 🙂 So I finally got my PC and at last my posts have become easy to do, which hopefully means more regular posts for all of you! I’m aiming to do at least 2 posts a week and will also be trying to find the time to start vlogging, as it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I’ve already had requests for videos and have got both a haul video and a contour video planned, but just haven’t got time to film them yet, but in the next few weeks I’ll definitely bite the bullet and get a video uploaded 🙂 Also, If you do have any videos that you’d love to see then please let me know as I’d be happy to give them a go!

Anyways, after that completely random intro it’s time for today’s actual post which is another review! This time it’s all about the Maybelline Baby Skin Primer and Instant Pore skinI’ve mentioned this in a few of my recent posts because I am completely and utterly obsessed with this product! It was a complete impulse buy, but boy am I glad I picked it up!

I’ve tried other pore erasers and have been swearing by my Garnier BB Cream as a primer lately but honestly it’s one of the best pore erasers/minimisers/primers I’ve used 🙂 I’ve tried the Benefit Porefessional before, but I really didn’t like it. I hate the consistency of it as it’s not really a clay finish but also not a liquid. It feels like it’s blocking my pores the second I put it on and feels really claggy on the face, but luckily Baby Skin is nothing like this.

The consistency of Baby Skin is much more like a clay (it’s a silicone primer so think of it like a more solid version of Vaseline) but despite the fact it’s so thick, it doesn’t smother the face when it’s applied. It glides on effortlessly without being greasy (unlike other pore minimisers which can be quite difficult to apply evenly to the face) and sits as a light film on the face. Describing it like a film really isn’t a good description but honestly, it’s amazing! It doesn’t even feel like it’s there but as soon as you apply it, it’s like it blurs away imperfections which makes it perfect to wear under foundation for a flawless finish. As well, unlike other pore minimisers which I’ve tried this doesn’t have a horrible smell. Lots of other products similar to this either smell too floral or too chemical which really turns me off a product, but luckily this isn’t like that. The best way I can think to describe it, is just that it smells clean (terrible description I know) and when I apply it in the mornings it really brightens me up and brings me out of my sleep-induced haze, as it just feels so fresh and smells so refreshing.

Now the top two questions I ask myself when reviewing products are would I repurchase this and would I recommend this to a friend? The answer to both of these questions is definitely YES! I honestly, don’t know how I lived without this before, but I can guarantee this will be a firm favourite in my make up box from now on. My only quip is that I find it a little expensive for the quantity (£7.99 for 22ml) when in comparison to my Garnier BB cream I get a lot more for almost half the money 😦 Now I know that £7.99 is hardly breaking the bank, but this product will not be lasting very long in my house! I’m using it every day (albeit sparingly) and this is likely to be a bi-monthly repurchase, but honestly I do think it’s worth it. It makes my skin look great when I’m having breakouts and when I have clear skin it just gives me that extra edge towards having a flawless appearance. As well as that, it also doubles up as a really good make up fixer! This holds make up on so well even without a spray, which is great, especially if you often have a long and busy day at work or if you’re out about and don’t have the opportunity to touch up your make up during the day, like me!

Now if you don’t have time to read all of this, or have forgotten what I said as I’ve rambled on a bit, then why not make up your mind in 2 minutes with my handy overview below?

  • Smells great
  • Blurs pores and imperfections
  • Light and fresh consistency
  • Real staying power all day
  • Isn’t too heavy and doesn’t block pores
  • Holds make up in place, even when you are on the go
  • Slightly pricy at £7.99 for 22ml (but still worth a purchase)
  • Matte formula – non-greasy

If it wasn’t for my quibble over the price this definitely would have received a 5/5, but because of that I am giving it a solid 4/5 instead (and begging you to go out and try this). Not only has it completely revolutionised the way I get ready it’s also turned me into a bit of a Maybelline fan girl! Before I used to stick more to Barry M, 17 or Maxfactor, but with their newer range of products (Better Skin foundation, Baby Lips lip balm etc.) which come in fantastic shades, are fun AND affordable, I am completely converted and not only will I be repurchasing this product, I’ll definitely be indulging in other Maybelline goodies too 🙂 As well, if you go to Boots regularly like I do, you’ll have noticed that they almost always have an offer on their make up (Maybelline products are currently 3 for 2!!!) so when you factor in both the price and the quality of the product they are definitely worth a purchase and have sealed themselves  a place at the top of my current favourite drugstore brands list!

Is there a brand which you prefer and if so, why? Let me know in the comments below as I’d love to hear! Also if you’ve tried the Baby Skin Pore Minimiser and Primer I’d also really like to hear what you have to say 🙂 As always, if you enjoyed this or any of the posts on my blog please like, share , follow and comment!

Lots of love, Leanne xx
