Life lessons: Get organised, get happier!

Hey everyone, I have a feeling that this is going to be a good blog post and a very apt one too so I’m just going to jump right in.

This year has been the one which has seen some of the most substantial changes in my life happen all at once which naturally causes chaos temporarily. Except the one thing that I find is that actually sometimes chaos happens and then kind of stays with you, which can build up and up without you even realising. I’m not ashamed to say that happened to me in multiple areas of my life and instead of looking at the root cause, I just made excuses.

From not having time to work out, not having an organised house, forgetting things – the chaos was impacting my life in almost every aspect and I didn’t even see how it was connected. And then,  by chance, some alone time and some inspiration from those closest to me, I realised I could achieve whatever it is I want to achieve, but with some focus and organisation.

I can make excuses until I’m blue in the face that changing jobs has left me with less time, but actually I’ve gained time in other areas which I’m just not using  correctly.

I’m very much of the perspective that life is too short to worry or stress (YOLO and all that) but actually it’s eye-opening for me to experience first-hand that stress can creep up on you without you even realising until it is gone. And now my eyes have been opened it’s definitely time to maximise on my awareness and improve all aspects of my life…

For example, a pet stress in my household has always been that I’ve been known to be pretty untidy which can cause wasted time looking for things, or a mammoth cleaning session which takes a whole day. But now I have thrown away anything which doesn’t get use or is just taking up space and make sure to keep on top of everything doing a little every day so it’s never one big task – literally making everything manageable 🙂

Another place I have been slacking is the gym! Last year I was at the gym 3+ times a week and loving it, but after having to take an extended break I haven’t been able to get back into it and instead complain about gaining weight and losing tone whilst effectively doing nothing about it! But not anymore! I’ve started looking at my locations for the week ahead and planning in advance in my google diary when I’m going and for how long as well as looking for different activities I can do to keep my interest, including long walks. Another reason this is so important, is that actually me time at the gym helps relieve any built stresses and gives me an opportunity to get away from my phone and have time just me and my thoughts, which I think we all forget is actually really important.

From the simplest things like picking your weeks outfits on a Sunday evening or having a clear out of your handbags to the bigger things like emptying your loft, or spring cleaning your finances – all these individual steps are likely to have a positive domino effect into so many different aspects of your life, that if you do nothing else this August, set aside only a few hours to reflect, review and plan. As whilst you do only live once, you want to make sure the life you’re living is as happy as you can possibly make it be 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this post as I found this really cathartic to write! I’ll follow up over the coming weeks with my gym/food schedules and any updates on how I am moving forward with my planning and organisation!

Let me know in the comments below any life hacks you have that could also help, as I’m always looking to make my life as easy and happy as possible 🙂

Post Christmas Clear Out

Hey everyone, Merry Christmas!!

Hope you all had an amazing time with your friends and family and enjoyed every second as much as I did 🙂

There are so many plans I have for my blog over the next 12 months but for now I’m going with a simple post – all about getting organised after Christmas (mostly because I am in a bit of a food coma so can’t think too much right now!)

If you are anything like me then the aftermath of the festive season will leave you feeling all a bit stressed and anxious as your house becomes inundated with pressies and people galore, and trying to find room for it all (especially in a little house like mine) can be a tall order!

Today I have spent my time cleaning and organising (as well as stuffing my face with loads of leftovers) to try and get back to some normality which has involved clearing out loads of old stuff, finding homes for lots of new stuff and just generally tidying up a bit 🙂

Honestly, getting your house in order (literally in this case) has left my mind feeling much clearer than it was before and actually it was really simple!

My house before I got organised!

My house before I got organised!

I mean, despite opting in for e-billing for pretty much everything I still get loads of post, and so buying a shredder and getting rid of all the old paperwork was such a quick win. Immediately we had loads less clutter and more room for stuff we actually want! And if you’re reading this I assume you probably got loads of clothes and make up just like I did, so just taking the time to organise it all into however you store your products (I’ll be posting about how I store my huge haul of make up and beauty products soon!) makes such a big difference 🙂 Hanging away all my clothes also really helped especially with my wardrobe organising plan which I posted about a while ago and which is definitely one of the best organising tips I’ve implemented. Plus by organising it all away you actually remember every item which you got!

Anyway, this is probably a really boring post, but basically I just wanted to tell you all that if you are feeling stressed and anxious about finding the time to sort everything and to get back to some normality, take a deep breath and look at the bigger picture! You’re not the only one who is feeling that way and to be totally honest, pretty much everyone is in the same boat at the moment! Break it all down into chunks and do one bit a time, it makes it much more manageable and don’t forget to play some of your favourite tunes as you work to make everything more fun (as organising and cleaning can be totally boring!)

Failing all the above, do some exercise! I enjoy going for a walk in the fresh winter air and clearing my head a bit as it makes everything that you worry about seem completely irrelevant and not only that a good double benefit of the walk is that it’ll help burn off those Christmas calories!!

I hope you enjoyed this post or that you at least found it a little bit helpful to reassure you that you’re not alone if you are feeling a bit frazzled. Do any of you have any top tips for overcoming stress or anxiety? If you do I’d love to hear them in the comments below!

Also while you are here look out for the launch of my Youtube channel coming soon as well as my fitness and health series that I’ll be doing to help you beat the bulge (which I definitely need to do after massively overindulging) which will be coming in the next few weeks a long with a couple of surprises I have coming up for you all over the next few months 🙂 As always if you enjoyed this I would really appreciate if you could like, share, comment and follow my blog and for more on me don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @lifestyleforless and Twitter @lifestyle4less!

Getting my life together – beginning with organising my wardrobe!

Hey everyone,

Sorry that it’s been so long since I did my last post! I’ve been really busy lately and it doesn’t look like it will be changing any time soon, but I promise I’ll post as often as I can over the next 6-8 weeks in any pocket of time that I do get 🙂 Work has been really busy and on top of gymnastic commitments and social engagements, my diary is jam packed – however my blog is a massive part of my life now so I am determined to keep it going even if I can only post once a week for a while.

Anyway, today I thought I would do a type of post I haven’t really done yet and write all about organising. Since becoming a homeowner last year things like organising really excite me (although I’ve always been a note taker and planner at heart!) so when my good friend showed me Alejandro Costello’s channel on Youtube, I was absolutely hooked! If like me, you could do with more organisation in your home and love feeling like everything is where it should be, then definitely check her out as she has some amazing tips and tricks to get you ready for any occasion 🙂

To give you some background, I decided that I wanted to get my house completely organised by the time the New Year rolls around. In March next year, Andy and I would have owned our house for 2 years and currently it still isn’t finished (sigh). When we bought it, it needed a lot of aesthetic work done and as happens with life, whilst most of the work has been finished, there are lots of small jobs which still need completing. Although this has been a fantastic project, sometimes it can all get a bit much and I find myself doing blitzes of the house to make it feel more together and organised, however it doesn’t take long for this all to come unravelled as not everything has permanent homes yet, and as it was our first property together, we are still taking baby steps towards finding out how we want to structure our perfect property.

For example, when we moved in we decided that our spare bedroom would just be a guest room. Over the following year, we hardly used the room at all ourselves and it felt like completely wasted real estate, so we decided to shake things up a bit and turn it into a room which we could use everyday. So started our guest room-to-office transformation project which involved the selling of our spare bed and make up table and the purchasing of a desk and PC. Since then (eventhough it isn’t completely finished yet) we’ve used the room much more! It stays tidier, looks fresher and makes us both feel a lot happier and settled. This one room transformation has really inspired me to do the same in all of the rooms in our house to see what else we can do to make our lives happier and easier than before.

As this project draws to a close I was wondering what else I could do to get organised when I decided that my wardrobes are a real area of scruffiness! The fact that they were so unorganised meant that I never took the time to properly hang anything up when deciding what to wear/at the end of the day which lead to my room slowly becoming a floordrobe. There are only so many times I could hang up my entire wardrobe in one go, so one lazy Sunday I decided to make a change. I took absolutely everything out of the cupboard laid it all out, decided what I would donate to charity and what would stay and then had a complete revamp of my storage! I currently have two wardrobes; one for tops and trousers and the other for dresses and outerwear but actually still this wasn’t categorised enough. I decided on a few categories and then put everything that I was keeping back in my wardrobe, but made some DIY labels for the different sections of my wardrobe collection e.g. boxy tops, jumpers etc. so that if I was looking for a specific item all I need to do is look at the different categories to help me narrow down where it will be saving me time and making it easier to both find outfits and also organise my clothes again at the end of the day. Not only was this really simple, but also it was completely free, pretty fun and at the end of the day I felt cleansed and like I’d achieved something!

I’ll also be repeating this in my other wardrobe (only had the time to do one of them so far) and then need to establish a good method to organise the drawers we have in our bedroom, however, eventhough I’m only half way through I feel so much more organised 🙂

What a mess!

What a mess!

During During

So much better!

So much better!

Much better for staying organised

Much better for staying organised

Anyway, I’ll keep you updated on how the rest of the house transformation goes and will also do a pic post soon about items I’ve found that I love for both organising and home decoration. I hope you like this post eventhough it’s a bit more lifestyle focussed than my previous posts! Let me know if you are aware of any other amazing organiser bloggers and please share your tips, tricks and favourite items you use to keep you organised at home or in the office!

Lots of love, Leanne xx
